Arabo-Aramaean (II/22)

Author: Mick Hession

Synopsis: Permit Nabataean armies to have Ptolemaic allies in 31BC only.

Proposal:

Insert new sub-section after "Upgrade horse archers to Reg LH (F) @4AP":

Only Nabataea in 31BC:

Ptolemaic allies - List: Ptolemaic (Bk 2)

Justification:

See Josephus, Jewish Antiquities XV:108.

At the battle of Cana, Herod's Judaeans were defeating the Nabataeans. However, the Ptolemaic general Athenion (who had held aloof, despite being nominally allied to the Judaeans) then intervened on the Nabataean side and routed the Judaeans. This is best simulated in DBM as an initially unreliable Ptolemaic allied contingent in the Nabataean army eventually becoming reliable. Despite the official alliance between Herod and Cleopatra, there is no indication that Athenion was meant to be co-operating with Herod, so he should probably not be treated as an unreliable ally of the Judaeans.
