Grading of 11th-12th century knights
Currently knights in several western European lists change from Fast to Ordinary (or, in France, to Superior) at 1150. This date is for the adoption of face-covering helms and horse-barding.
It has been suggested that the changeover should take place earlier, at a date between 1070 and 1100. This would reflect considerations of tactics and fighting-style rather than just of equipment, such as:
- The near-universal adoption of the couched lance, replacing the mixed weapon-handling styles of Carolingian and Norman armies.
- A new emphasis on close-packed knightly formations.
- The near-disappearance of the "Norman" feigned flight.
